Freemen on the Land (FOTL) are part of an emerging group of organized vexatious litigants who seek to engage the legal system while, at the same time, challenging its authority and practices. The existence of FOTL, also know as Organized Pseudolegal Commercial Argument (OPCA) Litigants as they were noted by Rooke J. in Meads v. Meads (2012 ABQB 571), poses a significant challenge to, and clog on, the administration of justice.
This is the 1st session of a two-part CLE-TV series aimed at bringing notaries, lawyers, government staff, and private sector staff quickly up to speed on how to prevent and manage OPCA litigation problems. The course focuses on:
- who they are
- how to identify the phenomenon
- what is driving the phenomenon
- more than a nuisance—staying safe
The 2nd session in the series is Dealing with FOTL/OPCA Litigation.
Law Society of BC CPD Hours: 1 hour (a minimum of 1 hour will include aspects of professional responsibility and ethics, client care and relations, and/or practice management)
