CLEBC would like to congratulate the students of TRU Law for winning the BC Law Schools Competitive Moot!
Featuring students from the University of Victoria Faculty of Law, Peter A. Allard School of Law at UBC, and Thompson Rivers University Faculty of Law, the annual event took place at the Vancouver Law Courts on Saturday, February 10, before sitting judges.
In the moot, the students had to argue whether a new tort — the tort of harassment — should be recognized. They then had to argue whether a government actor suing a private person for defamation should be able to obtain a permanent injunction against that person.
We were proud to once again be at the event, and it was a delight to hear all the students present their arguments in person. The quality of the students’ arguments and their adeptness in oral advocacy surpassed our expectations, leaving us highly impressed.
CLEBC is a proud sponsor of the Moot, each year helping pay for the travel costs and accommodations for the travelling students. This year, we were pleased to have CLEBC CEO Linda Russell and program lawyer Genevieve Chang at the event.
“Participating in a moot is no small feat. I still clearly remember my own moot argument all these years later — how nervous I was beforehand and how relieved I was when it was all over,” Russell told students at the event.
“Congratulations from all of us at CLEBC for being selected to participate in the BC Law Schools Moot and for all your hard work. We look forward to seeing you at our courses throughout your legal career as attendees and based on your stellar performances today, I have no doubt that we will welcome you as speakers to our courses and authors for our practice manuals in the future as well.”
Congratulations to all the participating students, as well as the dedicated coaches, administrators, and volunteer judges who made this invaluable experience possible. It was truly gratifying to be surrounded by such a talented cohort of aspiring litigators, and we eagerly anticipate their future achievements!
