Who should attend: Litigators practicing in areas where they are likely to encounter self-represented parties. 

Learning level: Fundamental

When you work cooperatively and engage with a self-represented person, you increase your chances of achieving a fair and just outcome. In this course, practitioners who have been successful in resolving disputes with the self-represented will explain their approaches, their successes, and the lessons they have learned. In addition, Dr. Julie Macfarlane will speak about her insightful research on self-represented parties.

At this course, you will learn...

  • tips for successfully negotiating settlements with self-represented parties
  • the mistakes that practitioners make that lead to complaints to the Law Society
  • what factors lead to self-representation
  • what the recent decisions on self-represented parties tell us
  • how to balance your duty to the court and your duty to your client

Law Society of BC CPD Hours: 1.5 hours. (1.5 hours will involve aspects of professional responsibility and ethics, client care, and relations, and/or practice management).
